on manic pixie dream people
[This is day #26 of my 30-day microblogging challenge. You can and should still join!] (Note: keep in mind when reading ahead that this is meant to be a rough draft!)
I’ve been called an “MPDG” for as long as I can remember. The best way I can describe the other people I see receiving such a designation is that they’re usually quirky, energetic, “fun”, somewhat childlike (great sense of joy), a bit chaotic, full of life, but also somewhat “alternative”. Usually somewhat neurodivergent.
Some people seem to be attracted to this archetype like moths to a light, but I never fully understood why… Until I dated a MPDB (manic pixie dream boy)!
Up until this point, I thought that my type was more like “grounded dad vibe”. I still somewhat think so, but now that my brain has been exposed to this archetype twice (in the form of aligned partners), I have to confess that I too can be vulnerable to its magic.
Why? Because it’s endearing, inspiring, awe-inducing, beautiful to see people with such a strong zest for life, with such sensibility, yet such immunity to the jadedness that can come with adult life.
It’s an archetype that makes you feel more alive, amplifying dimensions of yourself that are usually repressed or go unnoticed.
It may sometimes be somewhat of a fast burn, as having two intense obsessive people engaging with each other can initially mask many fundamental incompatibilities, and not everyone has the capacity to handle the chaos and freedom that frequently follows this archetype.
My conclusion for this post is that it’s probably worthwhile to experience this at least once in your life.
If you yourself resonate with the archetype, it might also serve as an exercise in self-awareness.
(Honest note: I’m writing this because I want to complete my daily microblog, and I don’t have much to share; besides a note of appreciation!)
(It’s especially beautiful when they are able to hold the duality of a more technical, analytical, and rational profile, with the sensibilities that come with an artist soul. A “young sensitive (wo)man” X “tech bro (or sister?)”.)
